“Sometimes, being a badass isn’t about being tough — it’s about being vulnerable. Tori Amos does both, and by her example many people have been helped to survive. It doesn’t get more badass than that.”

Tori Amos shares a crumpet with Matt Pinfield

“In this latest edition of 120 Seconds, Matt Pinfield sits down with Tori Amos, and along with having some baked goods and giant glasses of tea, the two discuss her latest record, Night of Hunters, and how her cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” transformed the song from grunge hit to delicate piano ballad.”

Tori Amos kicked off her tour to support her latest, critically acclaimed album, Night of Hunters, in Helsinki, Finland. Touring with the Apollon Musagète Quartett, Tori will be reinterpreting various songs from her back catalogue in addition to performing songs off the new album.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of opening night was a string interpretation of “Cruel”, off 1998’s from the choirgirl hotel. Tori stated before the song that it was an extremely popular fan request and, therefore, asked John Philip Shenale (who has done string arrangements for all her albums since 1994’s Under the Pink) to whip up a string version of “Cruel” for the tour.

Here’s an extremely high quality recording of the performance. Do you love it?

Tori Amos stopped by the Rolling Stone studio recently to talk about how working on a stage musical for the past few years influenced the creation of Night of Hunters, her first classical-based song cycle. She also explained why she loves to customize her setlists to suit the mood of the city she’s in and told us why Bach, Beethoven and Brahms “make some of our icon rock stars today look very tame.”
